It’s official. Hand lettering is having a comeback. After a decade
of Times New Roman, Comic Sans and their counterparts, a wonderful, whimsical
art form is in the midst of a resurgence.
With an enormous amount
of adaptability, you have probably noticed lettering popping up everywhere from
movie credits to business logos and even magazine covers. A quick look at the Instagram, blog or
website for typography whiz Jasmine Dowling will show you just how in demand
this art form is.
Lettering can be simply
defined as “the art of drawing letters”. Those of us who were scolded during
our formative years for our scribbly technique or struggled to be awarded our
pen license during primary school will appreciate the effort that goes into making
lettering look appealing to the eye.
Lettering can be hand
drawn with pens, pencils or brushes and has been around for centuries.
Lettering and calligraphy evolved alongside each other, along with other letter
related arts such as engraving. Even those in previous generations who could
not read admired the beautiful calligraphic art work that was being done around
the world.
In an age where we type more than we pick up a pen and write, a new found appreciation for hand
lettering has emerged. So what does this comeback mean for those who were given
the gift of a neat scribble? With a bit of practice, you could pick up a handy
side project, second income or even start your own business!
Common ways to draw an
income from your hobby include designing your own cards or typography prints to
sell online or at your local market. You can even do personalised baby name
prints or hand written invites or be involved in graphic design for small local
businesses.
The brilliance of
social media and other apps such as gumtree can be used to your advantage (and
for free!) when looking to advertise your pretty scribbles and start generating
an income out of your passion.
