Are you a
dental assistant looking for a new place of employment? A potential student
thinking about entering the industry? It’s only natural (and often necessary)
to look into what your salary might be like in that potential new role.
Unqualified
dental assistants in either sector can expect a less generous remuneration
package than those who have completed their Certificate III in Dental Assisting
or higher. Starting your new career pathway with this Nationally Recognised
Qualification is strongly recommended when salary is a factor in your career
choice.
Another way
to increase your salary or improve you employment outcomes in this area is to
be multi-skilled. A huge part of a dental assistant’s role requires
administrative tasks such as making appointments, or faxing client information
through to other medical professionals. Therefore any qualification or
experience in customer service, sales or administration can be a huge advantage.
Being a
dental assistant can be very enjoyable work. You will be expected to perform
tasks such as preparing patients for dental procedures, recording findings from
oral examinations and filing patient information.
Dental
assistants in either the public or private sector can experience a number of
work perks, including a Monday-Friday working week, being in an indoor medical
setting, and the potential of discounted dental work. However research shows
that it pays to go public.
A quick
glance at the award for each sector shows just how much you may be missing out
on when working for a private practice. A first year Dental Assistant in the
private sector should expect to be remunerated with a salary around $38K. By
comparison, a first year Dental Assistant working for the Government can expect
up to $50K.
Filling out
those pesky, detailed Government job applications may be worth it after all.
