Want to work outside?

Sick of staring at the computer screen all day? While landscapers may spend some of their time in an office planning and performing other administrative tasks, the majority of their working day is spent outside in the garden, maintaining and developing gardens, parks and landscapes. They may also cultivate plants, trees and other vegetation.

Typically working a Monday - Friday week, landscape gardeners will sometimes be required to work weekends for specific projects or to meet deadlines.

A typical salary for beginner in Australia is $42K per annum, and can grow to $65K with experience - and higher if you branch off to start your own business.

NSW, Victoria and Queensland are the top three states for employment as a landscape gardener.

Daily tasks may include:

  • Construction of pathways, walls, fences, pools, BBQ areas etc.
  • Planning spaces and designing areas
  • Selecting plants trees and flowers according to client briefs and preferences
  • Organising construction work with other employees or companies
  • Manually watering or installing irrigation systems
  • spreading fertilizers, trimming plants, cutting back trees
  • Building barriers to protect plants and spaces from pests, pets or passers by
  • Monitoring growth of plants
  • Prepping gardens by laying top soil, nutrients or fertilizer
  • Clearing land, rocks, trees, weeds and other objects
Landscape gardeners are required to use critical thinking and organisational skills, as well as problem solving abilities and attention to detail on a daily basis. Visual and spatial creativity are also attributes that bode well on your resume. In addition to this, a strong plant knowledge and relevant qualification will help get your foot in the door of an industry which has grown by 16.6% over the past five years.
