Dietician or Nutritionist?

Over the past twenty years, science has revealed more and more about the link between what we eat and how it affects our health. As this connection between health and food continues to grow, so will the demand for nutritionists and dieticians.

So, which path is right for you? Both assist in a person's journey to optimal health through food, but only a dietician is qualified to provide medical nutritional therapy, clinical nutrition consultations and write up specific meal plans for clients.

To become a qualified dietician you will need to undertake University level training with a minimum four year bachelors degree. This will lead to jobs in private clinical practices, hospitals and the medical nutrition industry. You will provide expert advice to people of all ages, prescribe dietary treatments for conditions such as diabetes, food allergies, cancers and obesity.

Don't want to commit to a University Degree? A nutritionist can also detect food allergies, sensitivities and eliminate bad eating practices by education. They can recommend certain foods or diets to their clients. They may work in the education and promotion of health eating, development of health products for the consumer, or give nutritional counselling to clients looking to improve their overall well-being.

A variety of different training levels and qualifications can lead to an individual starting a rewarding career as a nutritionist. This is because, in Australia, there is no government regulation on professional nutrition practice. Finding an accredited course with pathways to industry membership will help you to both find employment in this field, or set up your own business.

You may choose to work in food production, sport and fitness centres, public health units, research, teaching, marketing and communications, Universities, hospitals or even outpatient care facilities. You can expect a salary ranging from $38-$78K depending on your qualifications and experience.

Learning Cloud have a wide variety of courses to get you started as a Nutritionist, from short courses right through to Diplomas. If you are looking for a rewarding job in a growing field, have an interest in food and health - then being a Nutritionist is the job for you!
