Things to consider when starting your own grooming business

If you are comfortable around animals, starting your own dog-grooming business could be your ticket out of the rat race. Running your own business requires consistency, confidence and a lot of hard work, but for the right personality it is preferable to being dependent on someone else's pay-check. People with allergies or a fear of dogs need not apply for this entrepreneurial opportunity.

To get things moving, you are looking at a start up cost of around $2000. You will need clippers, shears, scissors, brushes, shampoos, conditioners, sprays, dryers, nail clippers, ear cleaning products, bandanas, and bows. Salons also are usually equipped with washing machines, dryers, bathtubs, professional grooming tables, and cages.

While this may seem daunting, it is a relatively small start up expense when you consider that pet services are the fastest growing sector of the pet industry. As owners continue to spend more and more on their pets, dog grooming businesses should continue to grow in profit. The profit potential is currently excellent, with groomers reporting earnings of $50K per annum after expenses.

To be successful in this industry you will need to start by learning the necessary skills by completing a formal grooming program and shadowing a professional through work experience. Dog owners are a conscientious bunch and most do not like to leave their best friends in the care of the inexperienced.

Grooming is a service you can operate from a home based studio, or a commercial store front. You might want to consider a mobile operation so you can service clients that do not have transportation or who have dogs that are difficult to transport. Mobile grooming is an increasingly popular trend, but it does require a significant investment to upgrade to a van with all the necessary equipment. Therefore it is recommended that you start from home and build up your clientele to make sure the business supports this venture before diving in. Plus, you will be able to claim the cost of a van back on tax once you have an established business!

When getting your pricing together it is important to consider the breed of the animal, the cut required and the time it takes to complete the grooming service. Research the competition in your local area or next town. You should fall into a similar range so that the business can be competitive. It is smart to slightly lower when first establishing your business to encourage customers to give you a chance. Offering a discount for first time clients can be a great way to get people headed your way!

Other marketing suggestions include:

  • Making your business stand out from the crowd with a memorable name or logo
  • Doing a mail drop in your local area to find clients
  • Leaving advertisements at local businesses
  • Get a website up an running - most people search for services through Google
  • Advertise your services on Gumtree - it's local and its free
  • Try and network with local vets, doggie boutiques, day cares and pet stores - they will recommend you if they remember you
  • Give gift certificates as part of animal rescue charity fundraisers or other community events - it gets your name out there and promotes return business
  • Satisfy your customers - word of mouth is a very powerful tool!

While starting your own business will give you the freedom and independence you may crave, you do need to bear in mind the weaknesses of a grooming business. Dogs are unpredictable creatures so there is always the risk of being attacked or bitten.

Liability is also a major issue. You are responsible for the health and welfare of the animal in your care. Any grooming business should have adequate liability insurance to protect themselves front he danger of clients taking legal action if a dog is injured or dies while in your care. Even without legal difficulties, pet health bills can be expensive so insurance is strongly recommended.

Note: All graduates of Learning Clouds Dog and Animal Grooming course are able to register with Pets Australia, which qualifies them to be able to get this liability insurance. All students are able to complete any work experience under Learning Clouds insurance while studying.
